Excellent short novel by Bolaño, every bit as entertaining and riveting as The Savage Detectives. I’m looking forward to reading his epic 2666…

Making good progress on Half of a Yellow Sun but that will probably take me at least another week.

I’m really enthusiastic about reading at the moment. I read a big chunk of Roberto Bolano’s Distant Star and then since he always talks about poetry I read some poems by Rilke. Here is one for you, called “The Grownup”, translated by Stephen Mitchell. The title in German is “Die Erwachsene”.

The Grownup

All this stood upon her and was the world

and stood upon her with all its fear and grace

as trees stand, growing straight up, imageless

yet wholly image, like the Ark of God,

and solemn, as if imposed upon a race.

And she endured it all: bore up under

the swift-as-flight, the fleeting, the far-gone,

the inconceivably vast, the still-to-learn,

serenely as a woman carrying water

moves with a full jug. Till in the midst of play,

transfiguring and preparing for the future,

the first white veil descended, gliding softly

over her opened face, almost opaque there,

never to be lifted off again, and somehow

giving to all her questions just one answer:

In you, who were a child once—in you.

Point of information: In the pharmacy where I work we have five patients named William Faulkner.

Well that only took a day, nice book.

Picked up 3 new books at the library today:

  • Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert
  • A Moveable Feast - Ernest Hemingway
  • Distant Star - Roberto Bolano

That means I now have 6 books on loan… Don’t know why I didn’t read A Moveable Feast when I was on a Hemingway binge in my late teens but anyway, I’ll read it now! There were three different translations of Madame Bovary, I preferred the one by Gerard Hopkins (Oxford World Classics edition) so I picked that up.

I also bought earphones and a study lamp.
